What the Fast Fashion Industry Faces

This is more of an informational post on what I think of the fast fashion industry. This is a topic I am passionate about and I wanted to share my opinion on this social and environmental issue with all of you!

It's the biggest issue the fashion industry faces, and our most talked about subject in my Global Fashion Industry class. Unfortunately, fast fashion is responsible for a plethora of human rights issues, promoting forced child labor in sweatshops across the world. Many of the clothes you purchased at Forever 21and other corporate retailers are made by those exposed to dangerous working conditions, are poorly paid, and work more than 10 hours a day. The environment is also largely at risk due to the mass amount of clothing produced, that is unable to break down in landfills. The manufacturing of fast fashion is the second largest polluter in the world (next to the oil industry). We need to make sure that our fashion is ethically and sustainably sourced, choose fabrics that last longer, and make careful purchasing decisions when shopping. Side note, right now smart textiles are being developed that can track vitals, assist people with medical conditions, and track the weather. Our clothing will be able to do that in just a few years!! I think fashion and technology is something that has not been fully explored yet, and I'm so excited to see what's in store. The fashion industry is changing and evolving everyday, let's make sure it's for the better. Thanks for listening!
